KAMRAN SAMIMI
BEFORE NATURE(I AM BOTH CREATED AND DESTROYED)
-
Kamran Samimi's first exhibition with The Third Line – Before Nature (I Am Both Created and Destroyed) – draws inspiration from the land's rich tapestry of natural materials. During his three-week trip to Dubai in the lead up to this exhibition, Samimi harnessed the organic shapes of the UAE's mountains and rocks to produce his paintings titled Translations (2024). He also produced a large stone sculpture titled Unbroken Column (2024) during his time in Dubai, which is installed outdoors in Alserkal Avenue. Delving into the concealed narratives of the UAE's mountainous terrain, Samimi's practice is deeply rooted in a profound sense of place. As he explores the dynamics between human and non-human ancestors, his multicultural identity (Iranian/Norwegian, raised in rural Hawai'i) lends a distinctive perspective to unravelling these connections and conflicts.

About Kamran Samimi
Drawn to natural ephemera such as stones, wood, pigment, and land, Kamran Samimi approaches his subject matter and materials with both curiosity and reverence. Informed by a strong sense of place, his artistic process examines the relationships and tensions between human vs. non-human ancestors via the lens of his multi-cultural identity (Iranian/ Norwegian raised in rural Hawai'i).
Samimi labors to create a sense of balance, seeing his work as an offering of beauty to a world full of injustice and devastation. His practice is indivisible from his worldview, informed by Zen Buddhism and Sufi Mysticism's emphasis on the direct experience of the natural world. Thus, his process is both penitent and whimsical as his hands move in accordance with the hands of Nature: simultaneously dismantling and reforming, controlled and compassionate.
